Multi-car crashes stopped part of Interstate 20 near Columbia

Part of a major Columbia highway was shut down Wednesday after a crash, according to a tweet from the Columbia Fire Department.

Multiple cars were involved in two crashes on Interstate 20 headed eastbound, according to the tweet.

One person suffered minor injuries in a nine-vehicle crash, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Lance Cpl. David Jones tweeted.

In the second crash, there was no one injured, though four vehicleswere involved.

The crashes happened at about 4 p.m. near Monticello Road (Exit 68), and all eastbound lanes were blocked, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation Twitter feed.

By about 5:40 p.m., the crashes had been cleared.

Even westbound lanes on I-20, from Exit 71 to Exit 68 were experiencing traffic congestion, SCDOT tweeted.

This is the same location where another multi-vehicle crash occurred during Tuesday’s evening commute, The State reported.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
