Yoga lovers in the Cayce and West Columbia area no longer have to fight traffic to get to a studio in Columbia or Lexington.

Inscape Yoga studio has opened in Cayce, near the up-and-coming State Street corridor. It’s the only studio devoted to yoga classes in the area.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I started doing yoga,” owner Missy Jones, a longtime Cayce resident, said. “I just had this dream of wanting to open a yoga studio. But back then, we still had two kids in high school and one in college. ... It was maybe not the time.”

But several years passed, and she found herself burned out from her white-collar career and, at last, an empty-nester. Jones’ husband and grandmother both encouraged her to chase her studio dream, she said.

When she began considering the space on Knox Abbott for her studio, Jones called her grandmother.

“She’s always been telling me to be brave and go for it,” Jones said. “She said, ‘Do you want to be 85 years old and wish you had, or be 85 years old and know you did, even if you fail?’”

Her grandmother died not long after that conversation, Jones said. On the day she planned to sign the lease for the studio space, Jones saw a hummingbird, her grandmother’s favorite bird.

“I knew it was a sign,” Jones said. “I have to open it now. She’s pushing me to do it.”

Jones opened her 1,200-square-foot studio in November. Its name, “Inscape,” refers to the unique nature or inner beauty of a person.

Jones and several other teachers are offering classes throughout the week ranging from more traditional yin yoga and vinyasa flow to classes that put a musical twist on yoga practice: There’s “reggae yoga,” “power ballad align and flow,” and a “rock and flow” class.

“A lot of yoga studios have the traditional yoga music, which is fine,” Jones said. “Even when I practice at home, I practice to country, heavy metal, rock and roll. I’ve even done Eric Clapton. So I thought, ‘Why not introduce it at the yoga studio?’”

And for something completely different: Inscape offers a Saturday morning hula hoop class focusing on core strength.

Inscape Yoga is located at 910 Knox Abbott Drive, Suite A, next door to Duke’s Pad Thai restaurant. All classes are drop-in and $10. More information about the studio can be found online at inscape.yoga.

Why we report on business openings and closings

The restaurants, stores and other businesses that come and go in our communities have a direct effect on our everyday lives. Where you’ll take your family for dinner tonight or why your neighbor closed down the family shop — these are conversations you have all the time with one another, and The State newspaper strives to cover the things you talk about and care about.

Reporters at The State regularly drive and walk through local neighborhoods and retail centers to notice openings and closings, check public documents for hints about business moves and — most importantly — talk to our friends and neighbors about what they see, hear and wonder about in the community. Feel free to reach out to our reporters anytime to tell us what you know or ask us what you want to know about local businesses.
