Popular gas station chain opening multiple Midlands locations for the first time

QuikTrip, a popular gas station and convenience store chain, is preparing to open four locations in the Midlands, which will be the first stores within 50 miles of South Carolina’s capital.

QT, as the brand is commonly known, plans to open at these locations in 2020:

  • 8205 Two Notch Road, near Interstate 77 in Columbia — projected to open in September
  • 10320 Wilson Blvd., Blythewood — projected to open in October or November
  • South Lake Drive and Interstate 20 in Lexington — projected to open in December
  • 305 Five Chop Road, Orangeburg — projected to open in December

An earlier announcement about the upcoming Lexington store drew scores of positive reactions on social media.

“For us, that’s really great news that people know who we are and they’re excited that we’re coming,” said Mike Thornbrugh, a spokesman for QuikTrip. “We want to continue to grow and try to continue to grow in areas where people who have an idea of who we are.”

These are the first Midlands locations for the gas station brand that is popular in the Upstate and in other regional metro areas including Charlotte and Atlanta.

QuikTrip is a roadside brand popular among travelers for its wide selection of hot foods, including pizzas, biscuits and tacos. The company has about 820 locations in 11 states, Thornbrugh said.

Why we report on business openings and closings

The restaurants, stores and other businesses that come and go in our communities have a direct effect on our everyday lives. Where you’ll take your family for dinner tonight or why your neighbor closed down the family shop — these are conversations you have all the time with one another, and The State newspaper strives to cover the things you talk about and care about.

Reporters at The State regularly drive and walk through local neighborhoods and retail centers to notice openings and closings, check public documents for hints about business moves and — most importantly — talk to our friends and neighbors about what they see, hear and wonder about in the community. Feel free to reach out to our reporters anytime to tell us what you know or ask us what you want to know about local businesses.
