Coroner identifies missing man whose body was found in Richland County woods

A Columbia man whose body was found in a wooded area of Richland County was identified by the coroner’s office Tuesday.

Tony Artess Edmonds, Sr., was discovered at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, near his home in the 1800 block of Barbara Drive, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.

That’s near Two Notch Road’s junction with Interstate 77, and not far from the connection with Interstate 20.

A family member found the 49-year-old who had been reported missing Jan. 3, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

An autopsy was performed, but Watts said the cause of death was not determined. Further studies are pending, but Edmonds’ death does not appear to have been caused by foul play, according to the release.

There were no obvious signs of trauma on the body, the sheriff’s department said.

Both the sheriff’s department and coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the death.
