SC teen dies on swimming trip with friends, coroner says
The death of a South Carolina teenager is being investigated, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
Hunter Randall, 17, died while swimming with friends Wednesday at a clay pit, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.
Hunter’s body was recovered at about 3:30 p.m. in the pit near the 2100 block of Pine Log Rd. in Warrenville, according to the release. That’s about 45 miles southwest of Lexington County.
The Warrenville teen was last seen alive when he jumped off an embankment into the water, according to the release.
He did not resurface and there was a search for the missing teenager until his body was recovered in the water by South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers, Ables said. Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
Information on Hunter’s cause of death was not available, but Ables said an autopsy is scheduled on Thursday in Newberry.
Hunter’s death is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
On March 31, another Midlands-area teenager died on a swimming trip with friends.
Armando Cervantes Estrada was one of several teens swimming in Lake Wateree when the 18-year-old Lugoff-Elgin High School student had a problem and went under the water at the Buck Hill Landing, Kershaw County Coroner David West said. The teenager was flown to Prisma Health Richland, where he died from complications caused by drowning, according to West.
