Columbia-area restaurants open for indoor dining: New updates for this week
South Carolina restaurants wre allowed to reopen for indoor dining begining, May 11.
S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster lifted the restriction on outdoor dining Friday with the caveat that patrons must still maintain appropriate social distancing, ideally 6 feet or more. Restaurant can open their dining rooms at up to 50% of normal occupancy.
The opening of dining rooms came one week after McMaster allowed outdoor dining for the state’s restaurants.
Some restaurants have chosen not to reopen immediately. Some will continue doing takeout and deliveries only, as they have for the past few weeks, and some will continue to have only outdoor seating available, which was allowed to begin last week.
All but one of the The Lizard’s Thicket restaurants, a popular local chain for 40 years, opened for indoor dining Monday.
“Our employees are ready to come back to work and we’re trying to get back to some kind of normalcy,” said CEO Bobby Wlliams, who is also chairman of the S.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association. “ But people are wearing gloves and masks, so it’s a different vibe.”
Other popular local chains are opening more slowly.
“It might be a week or so,” said Lloyd Bessinger of Maurice’s Piggy Park BBQ, which has nine stores in the Columbia area. “We’re working through the process. We have to get our employees trained in all the proper procedures.”
Rush’s, which also has nine local restaurants, plans to continue serving drive-thru orders only “for a little while longer,” according to its Facebook page.
Of those restaurants opening for indoor dining, some are using their outdoor tables as a first priority with indoor being for overflow.
