Have you ever had an overwhelming desire to be Mason, the Columbia Fireflies mascot? Now you’ve got the chance to apply.

The Fireflies, Columbia’s Class A minor league baseball team, will fill hundreds of part-time, seasonal positions for the upcoming 2022 baseball season. The team will have a job fair from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. on Jan. 29 (online copy updated) at Segra Park in the BullStreet District, according to a post from the Fireflies on social media.

The team, which is an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, begins its season April 8, and the schedule runs through mid-September. It is set to be the Fireflies’ first full season since 2019. The 2020 campaign was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the minor leagues played a shortened season in 2021.

Per an application that can be filled out in advance of the Jan. 29 job fair, the team is hiring part-time help for a host of game day positions, including, among others, grounds crew, ushers, bartenders, video production, security, cooks, concessions workers, and parking lot attendants. And, yes, you can apply to be Mason, the neon blue and green mascot.

Fireflies front office executive Brad Shank said the team typically hires about 350 part-time workers for a baseball season.

This will be the Fireflies’ sixth season at the city’s $37 million Segra Park, a key piece of the developing BullStreet District. It will be the second season in which the Class A team is an affiliate of the Royals. The team was previously a New York Mets farm club.
