Columbia continues to be well-caffeinated.

Coffee giant Starbucks is planning a new location in the capital city. According to a company spokesperson, the new spot will be built at 7550 Garners Ferry Road. That’s about 2 miles east of Interstate 77, near a Walmart and a number of other restaurants and retail locations. It’s a busy stretch of road, with state Department of Transportation traffic data showing about 31,000 cars per day passing by the spot where the coffee shop will be.

The Starbucks spokesperson said the java company is “always looking for great locations to better meet the need of our customers.” She said, when completed, the shop will employ about 20 people and will have a drive-thru.

The city of Columbia’s zoning board passed a measure last year allowing for a drive-thru facility on the site.

Starbucks’ plans for the Garners Ferry Road spot were first reported by The Post and Courier.

Starbucks has continued to be prevalent in the Midlands, even as it made the decision to close its shop in the Vista in December. There’s a new location currently under construction on Longs Pond Road near Interstate 20 in Lexington. There are more than 30 Starbucks locations in Richland and Lexington counties, according to a store locator tool on the company’s website.

Meanwhile, competitors are also brewing. Businessman and Richland County Councilman Joe Walker and business partner Andrew Reed plan to bring 25 Scooter’s coffee spots to South Carolina, including several in the Columbia area.
