Richland County coroner asks for help identifying man killed in hit-and-run crash
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has asked for the public’s help in identifying a man who was killed in a hit-and-run crash.
The man died April 1, Coroner Naida Rutherford said.
He was a pedestrian who was hit by an unknown vehicle in the northbound lane of U.S. 321/Fairfield Road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The vehicle drove away from the scene after the collision.
The crash happened at about 3 a.m., near the intersection with Sharpe Road, Highway Patrol said. That’s about a mile from Exit 70 on Interstate 20.
The coroner’s office described the pedestrian as a 6- to 6-foot-3 tall Black man who was believed to be in his 30s or 40s. The man had a shaved head and a tattoo of the initials “BMS” on his right arm, according to the coroner’s office.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Friday, 233 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, and 35 were pedestrians, according to the Department of Public Safety.
In 2021, 195 pedestrians were among the 1,192 people who died on South Carolina roads, DPS said.
At least 16 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2022, and five involved a pedestrian, DPS reported. Last year, there were 72 deaths reported there, and 18 were pedestrians, according to DPS data.
