15 Allendale County SC families in need after tornado destroys homes, Red Cross says

The American Red Cross of South Carolina is aiding 15 Allendale families after a tornado destroyed or damaged their homes on Tuesday.

Five homes were destroyed, four received major damage and six received minor damage after a tornado touched down in Allendale, a Wednesday Red Cross press release states.

Red Cross disaster teams are meeting with the families of those homes to open recovery cases and conduct damage assessments. Also, action team members are providing the families with financial assistance for immediate needs like shelter, food and clothing.

“As our teams work with the families impacted, we are certainly thinking about them and want to provide all the support we can,” Rebecca Jordan, executive director of the Red Cross central chapter, said in the press release. “This devastating event reminds us that disasters can happen anywhere at any time.”

The tornado was captured on radar around 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Allendale, prompting a tornado emergency declaration, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado emergency is a step beyond a tornado warning. It is declared only when a tornado is in progress and will likely significantly impact human life and cause major damage to property.

Along with immediate needs, Red Cross is providing virtual mental and spiritual care assistance to anyone in the disaster area who needs it.
