Barber shop plans shift for Columbia’s Five Points, Devine Street

It looks like the Soda City Barbers storefront will remain in Five Points, after all.

Meanwhile, a longtime partner in that business is splitting off and starting a new shop on nearby Devine Street.

The State reported on April 14 that Soda City Barbers was moving from its shop at 720 Santee Ave. to a new spot at 2321 Devine St. There was signage on Devine Street indicating the move, and a shop owner confirmed that initial plan to The State.

However, those plans have since changed.

Zayne Ward and Danny Trujillo have co-owned Soda City Barbers for the last several years. On Wednesday, Ward said that he and Trujillo have agreed to an amicable split from their business partnership.

Subsequently, Ward and a few other barbers will open Devine Street Barbers at 2321 Devine St. Ward said he hopes to open the spot on Devine Street as early as May 2. An Instagram post noted the Devine Street spot is taking appointment bookings.

Meanwhile, Trujillo will remain at the Soda City Barbers location on Santee Avenue, a fact that was noted in a Wednesday Instagram story on the Soda City Barbers Instagram page.

“We are very excited,” Ward said of the coming Devine Street Barbers. “It’s a bigger space, and an opportunity to have a little different feel. It’s an old Victorian style house, so a very cool vibe.”
