A Columbia Bojangles will be demolished, built back bigger. Check out the plan
A Columbia location of a popular fried chicken chain will be demolished, and a slightly bigger version of the restaurant — with more drive-thru lanes — will be built back on the property.
The Bojangles at 4301 Fort Jackson Blvd. will be torn down and rebuilt, according to plans approved by the Columbia Board of Zoning Appeals on May 5. The zoning items passed unanimously as part of the board’s consent agenda.
According to paperwork filed with the city, the current Bojangles at 4301 Fort Jackson Blvd. is about 2,600 square feet, and has a single drive-thru lane. The new unit would be 3,138 square feet and would have two drive-thru lanes.
“A second drive-through lane and menu board signs will be added to provide shorter drive-through stacking lanes that will enhance the traffic circulation and safety for all pedestrians and moving vehicles,” the Bojangles zoning application reads.
A timeline for when the work would begin or be completed was not disclosed.
Renderings for the project show that the rebuilt restaurant will have some tables available for outdoor dining. The Bojangles at 4301 Fort Jackson Blvd. is in the midst of a heavily commercial area, including the nearby Whole Foods-anchored Cross Hill Market shopping strip.
The Bojangles plan is not the only one in the Midlands in which a chicken joint would be torn down and built back bigger. Last fall the city Planning Commission approved the demolition and rebuilding of the Chick-fil-A on Harbison Boulevard, which would make way for a bigger store and more drive-thru capacity. Work has not yet begun on that project.
