A bakery plans to open in Columbia’s Five Points. Here’s where it will be
Columbia’s Five Points neighborhood is about to get a little sweeter.
Sweet GG’s Bakery, which specializes in a number of treats and baked goods, is moving from its former location on Fort Jackson Boulevard to a new spot in Five Points. The new location will be at 631-B Harden St., in the spot that used to be home to the Local Buzz cafe.
An opening date for the Sweet GG’s storefront in Five Points has not yet been announced. The coming location on Harden Street is noted on the bakery’s website and Facebook page, and there is a sign on the door that says it is coming soon. It will be next door to the Baked Bear ice cream sandwich shop.
Sweet GG’s makes cookies, cupcakes, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls and more. The business also makes custom cakes for special occasions, such as birthdays, graduations, baby showers, weddings and anniversaries.
The coming bakery is just the latest move in what has been a year of announcements or openings in Five Points.
The district has welcomed a number of new restaurant and retail shops in 2022, including Japanese eatery FuruSato Bento, The Turning Pointe dancewear store, Botanica de Santee clothing and gift shop, Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint, the Falafel King restaurant, Swiff Luxury streetwear store, Gameday Nutrition, Orangetheory Fitness, and the Flying Biscuit restaurant.
Acai bowl and smoothie chain Cocobowlz announced in September it would be coming to 2015 Devine St. Also, a new independent bookstore called All Good Books is being planned at 734 Harden St. And a brunch restaurant, Ruby Sunshine, has been announced for the former Yesterday’s location on Devine Street.
In July, the Boyd Foundation and GrowCo announced a new tech incubator hub at 711 Saluda Ave., in the former White Mule live music space. The Boyd Foundation has donated $1 million to get that hub up and running.
The Five Points Association, which represents merchants in the district, named Heather McDonald as its new executive director earlier this fall. McDonald has a long history in marketing and nonprofit work in the Midlands.
