13-year-old dies the morning after being found in Midlands lake, SC coroner says

A 13-year-old died the day after he was pulled from a Midlands lake where he drowned, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office said Sunday.

After being taken to MUSC Kershaw Health, Jaelyn Wells was flown to Prisma Health Richland where he died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Coroner David West said in a news release.

On Saturday, Jaelyn was in the water at Kendall Lake in Camden with his friends and a brother, according to the release.

When the teen didn’t return from going under the water, a 911 call was made at about 2:30 p.m., West said.

Camden Police and Camden Fire, along with Kershaw County Rescue Squad Dive Team, responded to the lake and began searching for Jaelyn, according to the Camden Police Department.

A member of the dive team found Jaelyn, who was brought to the shore and was given aid before he was hospitalized, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

Jaelyn went to Camden Middle School, where he played football and was preparing for his freshman year at Camden High School, according to West.
