Richland County girl killed in what deputies believe was ‘an accidental shooting’

A child was killed Monday in what is believed to be an accidental shooting, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

At about noon, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home in the 1200 block of Rabon Pond Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near Two Notch Road and Sesquicentennial State Park.

When deputies arrived, they found a 7-year-old girl who had been shot in the upper body, according to the release.

The child was taken to an area hospital where she died from her injuries, the sheriff’s department said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the child.

No other injuries were reported.

Although the sheriff’s department said it believes the shooting was an accident, the gunfire remains under investigation.

Information about who fired the gun, and how it was stored, was not available.
