What’s in a (pig’s) name?

In the case of the mascot for an under-development barbecue restaurant in Chapin, local residents are going to get to have their say.

518 Smokehouse barbecue restaurant is currently being developed at 673 Chapin Road. When the coming eatery was initially announced late last year, the restaurant asked readers for suggestions on what it should name its mascot. Images of the mascot displayed on the restaurant’s website and social media show an urbane pig wearing a high-collared tailcoat, with a tuft of tousled hair on its head and the slightest glint of mischief in its eye.

In a Thursday post on Facebook, 518 Smokehouse said it received more than 785 suggestions for the mascot’s name.

That list of suggestions has now been narrowed down to 10 finalists, and residents are being asked to vote for their favorite among those finalists on the 518 Smokehouse website.

The 10 finalist names, according to the website, are:

* Abra-ham Lincoln

* Baron Von Bacon

* Edgar Allen Pork

* Elvis Pigsley

* Murray Porkshire

* Rumpleporkskin

* Sir Bona-part

* Sir Loin

* Sir Chapin Bacon

* Thor The Boar

The 518 Smokehouse is the latest development from LTC Hospitality, the company run by Columbia’s Middleton family. LTC Hospitality has opened a number of restaurants and businesses in the capital city’s Main Street District, including The Grand on Main, the high-end Smoked restaurant, The Venue dueling piano bar, Hanabi Hibachi and Sushi, The Robinson Room and others.

Hiring has begun for the 518 Smokehouse, according to a recent post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
