A long-awaited Columbia Prohibition bar location is coming soon. Here’s what we know
A long-awaited Columbia outpost of the well-known Charleston bar and restaurant Prohibition is beginning to circle a timeframe for its opening.
Prohibition announced Friday that it will likely open at 1556 Main St. in Columbia in the “late fall” of this year. The space at 1556 Main St. was formerly home to Main Street Public House.
Prohibition initially announced plans to come to Columbia’s Main Street almost two years ago when the Public House closed. But with the exception of a seasonal holiday-themed pop-up bar in 2021, the space has sat vacant since the initial announcement.
The Charleston Prohibition opened on that city’s King Street a decade ago and quickly became known for its cocktails and Southern cuisine.
Prohibition said in a release that beverage director Jim McCourt will oversee a “cutting edge cocktail program” for the Columbia location and that he will “geek out with an exciting menu of specialty cocktails that explores a variety of spirits and flavor profiles, while also paying respect to the classics and their contributions to the industry.”
On the food side, the release said chefs Greg Garrison and Analisa LaPietre will bring “some of Prohibition’s signature dishes to Columbia — including the crispy Brussels sprouts with chili-lime sauce, the shrimp & grits made with heirloom grits and red curry butter, and the whipped ricotta toast with roasted broccoli and hot honey — while also introducing new dishes available exclusive to the new location.”
The Main Street spot will serve lunch and dinner daily, Prohibition said. The spot will have live music “almost nightly,” a release said.
