Patience, Irmo. It’s almost Aldi time.

Aldi, the supermarket chain that is known for its discounts and house-brand items, plans to open its new store at 1169 Dutch Fork Road in Irmo on Nov. 16, according to a statement from Aldi Vice President Krysta Cearley. She said the company will announce more details about a grand opening celebration soon.

There already are 50 Aldi stores in South Carolina, including five others in the Midlands. Those include three stores in Columbia and two in Lexington, according to a store locator tool on the company’s website.

Aldi has steadily grown across the U.S., with its low prices and streamlined store designs. One of the enduring quirks of the supermarket chain is that customers must deposit a quarter to unlock a grocery cart for shopping. The quarter is then refunded when the customer returns the cart, helping the company save money by not having to hire staff to collect the carts from the parking lot.

The new Aldi is coming to a high-traffic commercial corridor, with about 26,500 cars per day traveling down Dutch Fork Road in that area, per state Department of Transportation statistics. Other offerings in the immediate area include a Walmart, a Taco Bell, a Popeyes, a Chick-fil-A, a McDonald’s, the Ballentine Family YMCA and more.

And there’s a new Starbucks being built right beside the Aldi. An opening date for the coffee shop has not been publicly announced.
