The Vista has gone to the (hot) dogs.

Rebel Dogs, a new restaurant focusing on a variety of hot dogs, opened its doors Monday, Nov. 13, at 504 Gervais St. in the Vista. The hot dog shop is located across Gervais Street from a Publix grocery store and across Huger Street from a McDonald’s.

The new restaurant offers beef, turkey, vegan, gluten-free and keto hot dog options, along with sides such as potato chips, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and mac and cheese. Hot dogs on the menu include, among others, the Carolina Classic, which comes with house-made chili, cole slaw, diced onion and mustard.

A reporter from The State stopped by Rebel Dogs during opening day and had a beef hot dog with chili, mustard and onion, with a side of mac and cheese. The meaty frank had just the right amount of snap and came on a lightly grilled bun, and the creamy macaroni was a hearty, perfect side pairing on a cool November day.

Rebel Dogs said in a recent news release that it is “committed to delivering an unparalleled hot dog experience.”

“Embracing a lifestyle of breaking the mold and rebelling against the norm, Rebel Dogs promises an elevated take on America’s favorite fast food,” the release notes.

There have been several new or announced restaurants in the Vista recently. For instance, restaurateur Kristian Niemi’s Asian eatery and cocktail bar The Dragon Room debuted in July on Gervais Street; the Farmers Market Xchange, a market with fresh produce, a bakery and a cafe, opened in September on Lady Street; and The Hollow, a “forest-to-table” restaurant offering wild game and botanical cocktails, is being developed at 823 Gervais St.

“We’re delighted to welcome Rebel Dogs to the Vista,” Vista Guild Executive Director Abby Anderson said in a statement. “It has a quirky, fun vibe and, with the variety it offers, I’m sure it will be popular with customers.”

Rebel Dogs debuted in a high-traffic area of the capital city. About 31,800 cars per day travel down Gervais Street in that area, per state Department of Transportation statistics.
