In the small town of Lexington, SC, secrets, lies and racism came together to take away a young Black man’s freedom and ultimately, his life.

“The Wrong Walk Home: The Lynching of Willie Leaphart,” a new podcast series from The State and McClatchy, examines a 130-year-old mystery about the wrongful conviction and ultimate murder of a teenager who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But a local historian’s digging uncovered new details that have led to a re-examination of what happened to Willie — and the reasons why, in the eyes of his killers, he had to die.
