There soon will be a new place to get your coffee fix in a busy area not far from Lake Murray.

Clutch Coffee Bar, a burgeoning franchise that has a growing number of drive-thru coffee shops across South Carolina and North Carolina, is building a new store in the 1500 block of Lake Murray Boulevard in the Irmo area, company owner Darren Spicer confirmed. That’s about 2 miles east of Lake Murray and about a half-mile west of the intersection of Lake Murray Boulevard and St. Andrews Road.

Construction work was well underway when a reporter went by on Thursday. Spicer said Clutch is aiming for an early fall opening for the location near Irmo.

The menu at Clutch is highlighted by a number of mochas, lattes, energy drinks, teas, smoothies and shakes, as well as some snacks such as muffins and oat bars. Among the drinks is a mocha called the Base Jumper, which the Clutch website calls a “caramel + chocolate adrenaline rush,” and one called the Cloud 9, which offers a “decadent medley of coconut + chocolate.”

Clutch Coffee has a growing profile in the Midlands. In 2023 it opened a shop at 4716 Devine St. in Columbia, and in October 2023 it opened a location at 308 Columbia Ave. in Lexington, not far from downtown. The company also has a shop at 9349 Two Notch Road, just north of Interstate 77. Other locations across South Carolina include spots in Taylors, Rock Hill and a store in Greenville that is set to open this month, according to the company’s website.

The Clutch coming to the Irmo area will be along a busy thoroughfare. About 16,300 cars per day travel down the western section of Lake Murray Boulevard, and about 27,000 cars per day travel down the boulevard east of St. Andrews.
