More national businesses confirmed for sprawling new $65M Lexington County development
Developers are previewing more businesses that are planned for a massive new commercial and residential development in Lexington County, and the timeline for the project’s key grocery store is beginning to come into focus.
Construction is underway at the Platt Springs Crossing development in the 5400 block of Platt Springs Road, not far from the intersection of South Lake Drive, in Lexington County near Red Bank. Led by the Lexington Land Development Company, the $65 million project is set to bring restaurants, retail stores, townhomes, medical facilities and more to a 57-acre expanse.
The project was initially announced in 2023 and, in the course of the past year, a host of businesses have been announced. Those have included a Lowes Foods grocery store that will anchor the development, as well as Whataburger, Chipotle, Tidal Wave Car Wash, Planet Fitness gym and Panda Express restaurant.
Commercial development firm NAI Columbia disclosed additional tenants for Platt Springs Crossing in a Tuesday news release. The latest group of businesses slated for the project include Harbor Freight Tools, Heartland Dental, WellStreet Urgent Care, Firestone and Big Blue Marble Academy childcare center. The firm also said a regional bank is slated to be part of the project, but the name of that institution was not disclosed in the release.
Harbor Freight, the national tool and hardware retailer, has continued to make moves in the Midlands. In addition to the announced spot at Platt Springs Crossing, it recently opened a new store in West Columbia just east of Interstate 26.
Officials said more retailers are set to be announced for the development in coming months.
Construction of townhomes and Lowes
Meanwhile, more than 140 townhouses are set to be a part of the residential element of Platt Springs Crossing. Site work for the townhouses is likely to begin in September, developers said, and the first homes will likely be available in the third quarter of 2025.
The 51,000-square-foot Lowes Foods supermarket at Platt Springs has begun construction, and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025, the release said. It would be the sixth Midlands location for the North Carolina-based grocer.
The project is taking shape in a busy area. S.C. Department of Transportation traffic count data indicates about 28,000 cars per day travel down that stretch of South Lake Drive, while 18,000 cars per day travel down the section of Platt Springs Road near the burgeoning development.
