Temperatures in the teens took hold in Greenville, SC, Wednesday Jan. 22.

Less than an inch of snow fell across Upstate South Carolina, closing schools, businesses and community organizations as bitter cold took hold.

The temperature Wednesday morning hovered in the teens. At 8 a.m. the temperature was 17 in Greenville. The high for the day was expected to be in the low 30s.

The cold was expected to stay around until Thursday.

Roads were slick in spots but very little snow was on the ground. Most of the snow that fell in the Upstate was south of Interstate 85.

Greenville Police reported 24 accidents overnight.

Greenville television station WYFF listed more than 800 closings and delays on its website.

Most schools moved to eLearning, including Greenville County Schools, Spartanburg County districts and Anderson County.

Greenville County Schools canceled all activities, including athletic events and field trips Tuesday evening and Wednesday.

Hundreds of businesses delayed opening until 10 a.m., including medical facilities and day care facilities.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Upstate until 9 a.m. Wednesday with slick and hazardous roads due to lingering snowpack and black ice.

Slippery conditions were reported on roads, bridges and sidewalks, snarling the morning commute for those who had to go to work.

“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” the weather service said.
