An investigation is underway following the death of an infant at a Midlands home on Tuesday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 6:40 a.m., deputies responded to a call for help regarding a 6-month-old child, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

When deputies arrived at a Whipporwill Drive home, they found the baby was not breathing and without a pulse, according to the release.

A deputy immediately began to perform CPR on the infant and was relieved by EMS when they arrived, the sheriff’s office said.

Ultimately, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office was called to the home and pronounced the child dead, according to the release.

No cause of death has been announced by the coroner’s office.

The child’s death continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
