Woman’s body found inside burning home, South Carolina coroner says

A South Carolina woman’s body was recently found inside a burning home, according to the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

Mary Watkins, a 63-year-old Holly Hill resident, was the person who died in Monday’s house fire, Coroner Sean Fogle said Tuesday in a news release.

The fire was at Watkins’ home in the 1100 block of Gilway Street, according to the release.

Information about what time the fire was reported and how long it took to extinguish the blaze was not available.

Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene, Fogle said.

No other injuries were reported.

No cause of death was announced by the coroner’s office, which said an autopsy will be performed later this week.

There was no word about where the fire originated or the cause of the fire. Officials did not say if foul play was suspected.

The death is being investigated by both the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
