2-year-old’s cause of death released after body was found in house fire, SC coroner says

A young child died in a fire last weekend, and on Wednesday the Lexington County Coroner’s Office announced the 2-year-old’s cause of death.

An autopsy performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston showed that Remede Pridgen’s cause of death was due to smoke inhalation, Coroner Margaret Fisher said.

The fire happened at about 2 a.m. March 15 at a home in the 500 block of Canal Drive in the Pelion area of Lexington County, the coroner’s office said. Pridgen was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

The death continues to be investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the coroner’s office.
