Columbia and the surrounding region should prepare for a line of strong thunderstorms to move through the area Friday afternoon, the latest forecasts show.

According to the National Weather Service, the line of storms is expected to move into the area between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. from northwest to southeast.

“The primary threats will be damaging winds, isolated hail and a possible brief tornado,” the NWS states.

Also expect wind speeds of between 7 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. New rainfall amounts between 0.10 inches and 0.25 inches are expected, but more some spots could receive more.

While widespread flash flooding is not anticipated because of the quick moving nature of the line, spots that saw high rainfall amounts on Thursday may be more susceptible to very localized flooding, the NWS adds.

Residents are advised to be weather aware, check the latest forecasts and have at least two ways of receiving NWS warnings.
