Another Shoney’s has closed, leaving Columbia with none. What we know
The last Columbia-area location of a well-known restaurant chain apparently has closed.
The Shoney’s restaurant at 7335 Garners Ferry Road, not far from the Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was closed when a reporter stopped by Wednesday morning during what would have been operating hours. The Shoney’s name and logo had been removed from the front of the building, and the marquee message board portion of its roadside sign had been removed.
The phone number for the business was disconnected when a reporter called Wednesday morning. Posts from customers on social media indicated that the last day at the Garners Ferry restaurant was Aug. 10.
The Shoney’s had been located along busy Garners Ferry Road, just east of I-77, for a number of years. It was near a number of hotels, including a La Quinta and a Holiday Inn Express.
This marks the second time in recent weeks that a Midlands Shoney’s has closed. The location at 2208-B Airport Blvd. in Springdale, near West Columbia and Cayce, shuttered after 35 years.
Shoney’s was founded in 1947 and was once a widespread presence on the American dining scene. At one point the company even had an ad campaign starring TV’s Andy Griffith.
Shoney’s restaurants have long been known for their breakfast bar, burgers, and a dessert menu highlighted by a hot fudge cake.
