Lexington Health, the local hospital group formerly known as Lexington Medical Center, named a new president and CEO just weeks after announcing a change to its name earlier this month.

The company tapped Kirk Jenkins, who’s been with Lexington Health for over a decade, to lead when its current leader, Tod Augsburger, steps down at the beginning of next year. Augsburger had announced his retirement in April of this year, Lexington Health said in a press release.

The move comes less than a month after Lexington Health rebranded after more than 50 years as Lexington Medical Center. When it opened as the county hospital in 1971, it had only 125 beds and 250 employees. It’s since grown to be on the county’s largest employers, with more than 9,000 health care professionals, and a 607-bed teaching hospital.

Augsburger became CEO in 2015, but had been with the company for 16 years before that, Lexington Health said. Jenkins, a West Columbia native, will be the healthcare group’s fifth CEO in the 54 years its been in operation. He joined the company in 2013 and was hired to lead the physician network of Lexington Health in 2015.

“I am very honored to serve as the next president and CEO of Lexington Health and continue working with our dedicated and incredibly talented team to provide the highest quality care to our patients and their families, while strengthening our commitment to our communities as the only local, independent health system in the Midlands,” Jenkins said, in a statement.
