A new restaurant is being planned in a shopping center in a busy area of Columbia.

A Metro Diner is under construction in the Jackson Square shopping center at 106 Percival Road, near Forest Drive and Forest Acres. Permits for the project have been issued, according to city of Columbia records, and a building permit for Metro Diner was posted in the window when a reporter stopped by on Thursday morning.

The diner is going into a space that formerly was home to a Panera Bread restaurant, which closed in June. Other businesses currently located in the Jackson Square shopping center include a Petco store, a Wingstop restaurant and the Club Champion golf shop.

There are Metro Diner locations in a number of states, including Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Delaware, Indiana and elsewhere. Current locations in South Carolina include spots in Aiken, Anderson, Charleston and Indian Land. The menu at Metro Diner features a host of breakfast favorites, including omelets, pancakes, waffles and more, as well as burgers, sandwiches and appetizers.

The Jackson Square complex is located in a bustling area near Forest Drive, just east of Interstate 77 and the U.S. Army’s Fort Jackson training installation. Nearby businesses include a Walmart, a Chick-fil-A, a McDonald’s and more. About 29,000 cars per day travel down Forest Drive nearby, according to S.C. Department of Transportation traffic count data.
