Four people lose their SC home in morning blaze, Columbia Fire Department says

Four people were left without a home Monday following a fire in South Carolina, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

At about 9 a.m., firefighters responded to a burning building in the Coatbridge subdivision, the fire department said on social media. That’s in the northeast area of Columbia.

Firefighters saw that the garage area of the home was fully involved with the blaze, according to the fire department.

The responding crews quickly contained the fire to the home’s garage before bringing it under control, the fire department said.

While flames didn’t escape the garage, other parts of the home suffered smoke damage, leaving the four residents displaced, according to the fire department.

No injuries were reported.

The fire department said it determined that an unattended candle was the cause of the fire.

Don’t be scared, be prepared

With Halloween later this week, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division offered advice for avoiding decoration and costume related fires:

  • Never leave burning candles unattended
  • Keep decorations away from open flames, bulbs and heaters
  • Use battery-powered lights for decorations
