A growing banking company is building a new branch location along a high-traffic Columbia corridor.

Fifth Third Bank, the Cincinnati, Ohio-headquartered company that has locations in a host of states, is building a new location at 4490 Devine St. in Columbia, according to city of Columbia building permit records and signage at the site.

A projected opening date for the Devine Street location hasn’t been publicly announced, but construction was underway at the property when a reporter went by on Monday morning. “New Bank Taking Shape,” read a blue Fifth Third Bank sign at the site.

The bank will be coming to a popular retail and commercial thoroughfare along Devine Street near Garners Ferry Road. It will be just in front of a shopping center that is anchored by a Food Lion grocery store. There’s a Buffalo wild Wings next door, and other nearby national businesses include Whataburger, Whole Foods, Bojangles and Walgreen’s, among many others. Nearly 30,000 cars per day travel down that section of Devine Street, per state Department of Transportation data.

There are nearly 1,100 Fifth Third locations across 12 states, according to the company’s website. Some of those states include South Carolina, Ohio, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, among others.

The company is just gaining its first foothold in the Columbia area. Aside from the under-development Fifth Third at Devine Street, there also is a branch under construction at 146 Harbison Boulevard in the busy Harbison shopping district.
