Man accused of leaving girlfriend at hospital with gunshot wound charged with murder

A man who is accused of dropping off his girlfriend with a gunshot wound at a hospital and leaving her there in a wheelchair alone has been charged with murder.

Albertus Lewis, 24, is being held on several charges, including murder, resisting arrest, possession of a narcotic and obstruction of justice at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the jail’s booking information. Lewis has been at the jail since he was initially arrested on the obstruction of justice charge July 6.

Investigators were able to determine that Lewis shot 20-year-old Mayra Sanchez, but the motive is unclear, said Sgt. Brittany Jackamonis, spokeswoman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Lewis was initially accused of driving Sanchez to Palmetto Health Richland with a gunshot wound to the head, placing her in a wheelchair and leaving her at the hospital on July 5 between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., Jackamonis said at the time.

Sanchez was treated for about two hours and was declared dead at 6:14 a.m., said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
