Columbia man charged with fatal shooting at River Oaks Apartments 2 years ago

A man in jail on federal weapons charges was charged with murder on Friday in the death of a 29-year-old Columbia man, who was shot to death on August 11, 2015, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Leonard Mickens, Jr., 27, was accused of shooting Donte O. Doyle around 4:30 p.m. outside the River Oaks Apartments on the 3500 block of Bush River Road. Doyle died later that day at the Lexington Medical Center.

The motive for the shooting was not released.

“Providing some sense of closure to Mr. Doyle’s family exactly two years after the incident is especially meaningful to everyone who responded to and investigated this case,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a news release on Friday.

Mickens was being held at the Lexington County Detention Center Friday night.
