A man was arrested and charged Monday for his involvement in a fatal moped collision that killed a University of South Carolina student.

Charles Davenport, Jr., 24, is charged with Felony DUI Involving Death.

David Newell, 22, died Nov.16 because of complications from injuries received in the collision, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Nov.15, at the 1800 block of Rosewood Drive.

Davenport was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding when he hit Newell’s moped from behind, according to police.

Investigators believe the truck hit the moped and dragged it down Rosewood Drive. The impact caused the two vehicles to strike a tree.

Davenport was released from a local hospital Monday after receiving injuries during the collision, police said. He was then taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and will have a bond hearing Tuesday.
