50-year-old Columbia man shot at gas station near his home, coroner says

A 50-year-old Columbia man is dead after being shot at a Richland County gas station Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Jose Martinez died at about 11:45 a.m. after being shot in the torso at the Exxon gas station on the 9400 block of Wilson Boulevard, according to the statement.

Martinez lived on the same street, according to the statement.

After being shot at about 9:30 a.m., Martinez walked or drove to a nearby lot, where he was found by EMS crews and taken to the Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, according to the statement.

The case is being investigated by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
