Three teenagers charged with murdering a Midlands man in his home, police say

Three teenagers have been charged with murder, among other crimes, for shooting a Midlands man in his home, the Sumter Police Department said.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours on Sept. 30, 2019, at the Dingle Street home of McKenzie Corey Stewart, police said in a news release.

The 15-, 16-, and 17-year-old were arrested between Jan. 9 and 10, according to the release.

Police said one teen waited outside of Stewart’s home while the other two entered and demanded money before shots were fired.

The teens left the scene with money and other items from the home, while the 42-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to an area hospital where he died, according to the release.

Stewart was buried at Bradford Cemetery and is survived by two daughters and a son, among other relatives, according to his obituary in the Sumter Item.

Community tips helped develop and corroborate information in the investigation, and led to the arrests, police said.

The teenagers identities are not being made public because of their ages, as all were younger than 17 when the shooting happened, according to the release.

All three were charged with murder, conspiracy, first-degree burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said.

The teens are being held in a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice facility, according to the release.

In spite of the arrests, police said the shooting remains under investigation.
