Man killed in Columbia shooting by 20-year-old who was out on bail, police say
A 22-year-old man who was shot at an apartment complex has died, the Columbia Police Department said Wednesday.
Two people were arrested in the murder that police called an “isolated drug-related incident.”
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified John Ashford as the man who died at an area hospital shortly after the shooting, police said in a news release.
The shooting occurred before 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Gable Oaks Apartments in the 900 block of Colleton Street, police tweeted. That’s near the intersection of North Main Street and Fairfield Road.
Responding to a shots fired call, officers found Ashford outside of the apartment complex suffering a gunshot wound, according to the release.
Ashford was taken to an area hospital with a “life-threatening injury,” after being shot in the upper body, police said.
A vehicle was seen speeding away from the apartment complex after the shooting, but was soon located in the 800 block of Chester Street, according to the release.
One of the people inside, Marquise Trevon Randolph, ran away from officers but was captured at 501 Elmwood Avenue, police said. That is about five miles from the apartment complex.
Both Randolph, 20, and Geraldine Denise Manigault, 43, were arrested, according to the release.
Manigault was charged with accessory after the fact of murder, jail records show. Her bond was set at $200,000 and she remains behind bars at the Alvin S. Glenn detention Center, according to jail records.
Randolph was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a person convicted of a violent crime, jail records show.
No bond has been set for Randolph, who police said will appear in court at a later date and also is being held at the Richland County jail.
Randolph was out on bail when Ashford was killed, police said.
On Jan. 13, Randolph received a $10,000 surety bond in connection with an armed robbery and weapons investigation by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.
Several vehicles were damaged during Ashford’s shooting, but no other injuries were reported, police said.
