Pedestrian killed and hit-and-run driver of red vehicle wanted, SC cops say
South Carolina Highway Patrol is searching for the driver of a vehicle that left the scene of a deadly crash in Columbia Sunday morning.
A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run collision on Interstate 77, Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.
The crash happened minutes after 6 a.m. at the 8-mile marker of I-77, according to Tidwell. That’s near Exit 9A/9B, which is the junction with Garners Ferry Road.
Part of the highway running through northeast Richland County was blocked for about five hours, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. For close to an hour all northbound lanes on the I-77 were blocked, SCDOT tweeted.
The person was walking on I-77 when they were hit by a northbound vehicle and killed, Tidwell said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the person after notifying the next of kin.
The person in the vehicle drove away, and the make and model are not currently known, according to Tidwell.
Highway Patrol said the vehicle might be red with damage to its front end.
No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries have been reported.
Anyone with information is asked to call Highway Patrol at 803-896-9621 or 800-768-1504, or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
The collision continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol.
