Man killed in overnight shooting, Richland County Sheriff’s Department says

An investigation is underway into the shooting death of a man found in Columbia Tuesday night, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

It was just before 9:30 p.m. when deputies responded to a shots fired call in the 1600 block of Longcreek Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s near the intersection of Broad River Road and Interstate 20.

Deputies found one man who had been shot, according to the release. He later died from his injuries, the sheriff’s department said Wednesday morning.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the man after performing an autopsy and his family has been notified.

Information on a shooter, or shooters, was not available, and there was no word on a motive for the gunfire.

The shooting has been called a homicide by the sheriff’s department, which is continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

This was at least the second shooting on Tuesday investigated by the sheriff’s department.

Earlier in the day deputies found a man at the Hooters on Two Notch Road who was shot in the upper body. That incident is also still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
