A teen is shot at apartments, increasing law enforcement presence at Midlands high school
A day after a teenager was shot at an apartment complex, a large law enforcement presence was reported at a Midlands high school Tuesday.
“Faculty, staff and students have likely noticed an increased law enforcement presence at Irmo High,” Lexington County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick told The State Tuesday.
Deputies were interviewing students at the Lexington-Richland 5 school, according to Myrick.
The shooting, described by witnesses as a “drive-by,” might be connected to recent fights at Irmo High, Myrick said.
On Monday night, a teenager was shot in the lower body at River Oaks Apartments, according to Myrick. That’s near Bush River Road, close to its intersection with St. Andrews Road.
Information if the teen was hospitalized was not available, but the teen is expected to recover, Myrick said. Further information on the teen’s condition was not available.
There was no word on a motive for the fights at Irmo High, or any information if the shooter/shooters are suspected to be students. The shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.
“We want to be visible as we work with district officials to ensure all those who work and learn on, and visit the campus remain safe,” Myrick said.
