Lexington County coroner IDs man killed at SC business where woman was also shot

The Lexington County coroner has identified a man who died in a West Columbia business on Tuesday.

Philip Calvin Jackson, 45, of Lexington, died at the scene on Ermine Road of multiple gunshot wounds, Coroner Margaret Fisher said. An autopsy on Jackson’s body will be conducted on Saturday.

A woman was also hospitalized Tuesday after deputies were called to the scene on the 400 block of Ermine Road. Lexington County sheriff’s deputies said at the time she was shot by the man who died at the scene.

The business where both were shot was not identified by deputies, but the site is close to the intersection with U.S. 1/Augusta Road.

There was no word Tuesday why the man and woman were at the business, or any information about a possible connection they had prior to the shooting, or a motive for the gunfire.

Sheriff’s deputies processed the scene Tuesday, collected evidence, and interviewed neighbors as well as other people in the area who might have had information about the death.

Medical officials told deputies that the 34-year-old woman is in stable condition after having surgery. Further information about her was not available.

The sheriff’s department originally said two people died Tuesday before confirming there was just one death at about 7:45 p.m.

The sheriff’s department said the death was considered “an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s department.

“While our work on the case continues, there is no ongoing search for other potential suspects or persons of interest related to the shooting,” sheriff’s department spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick told The State Wednesday.
