Lexington County man killed in crash where car ran off road is identified by coroner
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in West Columbia that happened early Saturday morning.
Marvin James Gilpatrick Jr., a 60-year-old Gaston resident, was killed in the accident, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Monday.
Gilpatrick was driving south on Gardner’s Terrace Road, near Gillan’s Terrace Road, in a 2007 Nissan sedan then ran off the left side of the road, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The car struck two culverts before overturning, according to Ridgeway.
Gilpatrick, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene, Fisher said.
Ridgeway said no other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through May 7, at least 321 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 12 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 43 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
