SC man arrested after another driver is killed in crash, Highway Patrol says

A man was arrested after one person was killed and another was hurt in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened Friday on a section of Interstate 26 that runs through Orangeburg County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.

At about 3 a.m., a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe was disabled on the westbound side of I-26 at the 154 mile marker, according to Glover. That’s near Exit 154, which is the junction with U.S. 301.

A 2019 Kia Stinger was driving west on I-26 when it ran off the highway and crashed into the Chevy, Glover said.

The Chevy driver died at the scene, according to Glover.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.

A passenger in the Chevy was injured and taken to an area hospital, Glover said. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported by the Highway Patrol.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Glover said 37-year-old Summerville resident Derek Dooley was driving the Kia, and he was arrested on felony charges of DUI involving death and DUI with great bodily injury.

No bond was set following a Saturday court appearance, Orangeburg County judicial records show. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 11, according to judicial records.

Despite the arrest, the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 9, 505 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 23 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 47 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
