Police standoff with man barricaded in Midlands home resolved peacefully, sheriff says

A police standoff with a man who barricaded himself inside a Columbia home ended peacefully Tuesday afternoon, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The man, who had threatened to kill himself, law enforcement officers and others, was transported to the hospital for evaluation. He will then be booked into jail, the department said.

The incident began as a domestic violence report Monday night, Sheriff Leon Lott said at a news conference.

A man threatened a woman at the residence in the 100 block of Morningside Drive and shots were fired, according to Lott.

The woman, who was not injured, on Tuesday went to a sheriff’s department office on Broad River Road to report what happened, the sheriff said.

When deputies responded to the scene in the area between Broad River Road and Interstate 26, about a mile from Exit 106 at St. Andrews Road, the man inside refused to open the door, according to Lott.

Deputies had been trying to communicate with the man since 10:30 a.m., and at one point heard a gunshot, Lott said. There was no word on the barricaded man’s condition.

No injuries were reported.

Both crisis negotiators and the sheriff’s department’s special response team worked to communicate with the man, deputies said in a news release.

The sheriff’s department is also used a robot and a drone at the scene, according to the sheriff.

As a precaution, deputies said they evacuated nearby houses, while other residents in the area were asked to shelter in place.

Deputies told drivers and others to stay away from the scene.

There was no word if any roads have been closed.

“There’s no innocent people in any houses and immediate area where the situation’s going on,” Lott said. “It’s very active right now but we’re proceeding very cautiously. We want to make sure we have a good result here and no one is injured.”
