SC man called ‘reckless and dangerous’ by police chief after shooting

A South Carolina man was arrested and called “reckless and dangerous” following a shooting, according to the Irmo Police Department.

Maurice T. McQuire, a 20-year-old Chapin resident, was charged with four counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said in a news release.

The charges stem from an Aug. 3 shooting in the New Friarsgate Subdivision, according to the release. That’s in a suburban section of Richland County.

No one was injured in the shooting, but two houses and a car were damaged by the gunfire, police said. There was no word on a motive for the shooting.

Officers responded to the neighborhood, where they processed evidence and conducted interviews, according to the release. McQuire was arrested — without incident — on Aug. 16, police said.

McQuire was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and denied bond, according to the release.

“We are very fortunate that nobody was hit during this incident,” Police Chief Bobby Dale said in the release. “To commit this act in broad daylight in a neighborhood shows just how reckless and dangerous McQuire is. I am proud of the work our investigators put in to have McQuire jailed and thankful that his bond was denied.”

McQuire is scheduled to return to court Oct. 25, judicial records show.

He was out on bond when the shooting occurred.

He was arrested July 1, 2023, when he was charged with hit-and-run, purchase or possession of beer or wine by minor, following vehicle too closely and littering, Richland County court records show. McQuire was released on $11,298.75 bond on those combined charges, which are pending, according to court records.
