Two sisters shot by a man who was visiting his child, South Carolina sheriff says

Two sisters were shot Sunday at a South Carolina home and one of them died, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 5:30 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call from the mother of the victims about a shooting at a Foxborough Road home in Spartanburg, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.

One of the victims was found in the road and the other had been shot inside the home, according to the release.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victim who was found in the road as 29-year-old Marisa Lashae Dowdle, television station WHNS reported. She was shot in the head, an arrest warrant shows.

The surviving victim is expected to recover from her injuries, the sheriff’s office said. No other injuries were reported.

The victims’ mother provided the suspect shooter’s name, a description of the clothes he was wearing and the direction he was traveling, according to the release.

Other deputies found the man, later identified as 38-year-old Spartanburg resident Tyrone Douglas Brown, while he was walking, just a short distance from the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

The victims’ mother told deputies that Brown was at the house visiting with his child, a minor, since another daughter of hers who died last year was the mother of that child, according to the release.

Brown got into an argument with both victims before the situation escalated into a physical altercation, the sheriff’s office said. Information about why Brown was arguing with the victims was not available.

Brown pulled out a gun and shot the first victim inside the house, and when the second victim chased him outside, he shot her as well, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies detained Brown and took him to the sheriff’s office where he told them the shooting was an act of self defense, according to the release. But evidence at the scene, along with statements from the surviving victim and witnesses, refuted that claim, the sheriff’s office said.

Brown was charged with murder, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in addition to possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to the release.

A bond hearing for Brown was scheduled for Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said. He is currently locked up in the Spartanburg County Detention Center, jail records show.
