SC woman arrested after neighbor she had dispute with was killed, sheriff says

A South Carolina woman was arrested on multiple charges Wednesday after a man who was her neighbor was shot and killed, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Charmika Wright, 46, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

James R. Outland, a 22-year-old Irmo resident, was identified as shooting victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Thursday.

At about 3 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the cul-de-sac of Hedgefield Court, according to the release. That’s in Irmo, near Broad River Road and not far from its junction with Lake Murray Boulevard.

Prior to arriving, deputies were told the suspected shooter, Wright, was still there, the sheriff’s department said. When the first deputy got to the neighborhood, he located and detained Wright, according to the release.

The deputy also found a man nearby, later identified as Outland, who had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said. Deputies provided care before EMS took the victim to a local hospital where Outland died shortly thereafter from the injury he suffered in the shooting, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s department said the shooting “was the result of a neighbor dispute.” Further information about the dispute was not available.

Wright was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set and Wright remains behind bars, according to jail records.

Following a bond hearing, the Irmo resident is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 31, 2025, Richland County judicial records show.
