10-year-girl killed by family member with small caliber rifle, South Carolina coroner says

A 10-year-old girl was shot and killed Monday night, according to South Carolina officials.

Miyah Harp died after being shot in the chest, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said Tuesday.

Both Ables and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting appears to be accidental.

Just before 10 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 300 block of Wendy Lane, the sheriff’s department. That’s in the Windsor area, near Aiken State Park.

Deputies found the child with the gunshot wound and provided Miyah aid until emergency responders and Aiken County EMS arrived and they continued to try and save the girl, according to the sheriff’s department.

The coroner’s office was called to the scene at about 10:30 p.m., where Miyah was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m., Ables said.

No other injuries were reported.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a family member was handling a small caliber rifle when it was accidentally discharged,” Ables said in a news release.

There was no word about the age of the shooter, and if they, or anyone else will face any charges.

An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, as Miyah’s death continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.
