Thousands in cash and more than a pound of drugs confiscated during search, SC police say

A South Carolina man is in jail after drugs and cash were seized in recent searches, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Jermaine Jy-Quan Smith Jr., a 22-year-old Sumter resident, was charged with trafficking of methamphetamine (400 grams or more), police said Thursday in a news release.

Nearly $16,500 in cash and more than a pound of meth were confiscated after warrants were served at two properties — in the Broad Street and Highland Avenue areas — that are connected to Smith, police said.

Smith was arrested after weeks of investigation conducted by police and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, according to the release.

Smith was booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and remains behind bars after bond was denied Thursday, police said.

Despite the arrest, police said the investigation is ongoing.

Smith was out on bond when he was arrested Tuesday.

On March 25, 2024, Smith was arrested on three drug charges and one count of failure to stop for a blue light, Sumter County court records show. He was released the next day after $70,000 bond on the combined charges was posted, according to court records.

Smith also faces pending burglary and drug trafficking charges from separate arrests in November and December of 2022, court records show. Bonds, in a combined total of $18,500, were posted within two days of each arrest, according to court records.

On Nov. 21, 2024, Smith pleaded guilty to a drug manufacturing charge stemming from an August 2021 arrest, court records show.
